What It Means to "Do the Work" + Green & Red Flags to Consider When Hiring a Coach

What is “doing the work”?

The work is about taking purposeful steps toward self-healing, self-love, and self-improvement.

When we consider doing the work, there are many ways to do it and a myriad of approaches to take. I hope in these episodes, you find strategies that work for you on your journey of healing, love, and improvement!

Doing the work can be an intense and emotional journey that often requires an introspective look at past traumas, childhood wounds, subconscious impressions, karma, and societal programming. Traumas, wounds, programming, and subconscious belief systems often came from things we had zero control over.

We may try to suppress trauma or anything negative, and by pushing these feelings and experiences down into our subconscious without understanding the emotion, we develop scars.

Read more on the steps for doing the work from Emily Campbell: “What is Doing the Work and How to Use it To Heal.”

In this episode, I’m sharing one of the best approaches to the work: revealing and healing our shadows.

The Four Steps to Reveal and Heal Your Shadow

Every single human has shadows. So, what's important is first to reveal them, which is surprisingly difficult because often, we have no idea they're even there since they lay in our subconscious.

STEP ONE: BECOMING AWARE

STEP TWO: TRANSFORMING THE TRIGGER

STEP THREE: HEALING THE SHADOW

STEP FOUR: FINDING YOUR TRUE SELF

By doing the work, we get closer to our authentic selves. We get more intuitive by revealing, healing, and transforming our scars. We begin to realize what our souls want to manifest in this world and stop living for others or out of fear.  Everyone deserves this, and I hope that your work journey allows you to find your sense of inner truth.

If you’re considering working with a coach or consultant to support your growth, evolution, and transformation in the year ahead, here are some green and red flags to consider, as well as questions to ask to ensure you’re spending your time and energy in a supportive and safe environment.

Green Flag When Hiring a Coach

Questions to ask:

  • Do they show their qualifications?

  • Is the programming clear and is it easy to understand what you’ll receive?

  • Is the pricing clear, grounded, and fair?

  • Can you ask questions to ensure the program is right for you before buying?

  • Are there testimonials from previous clients?

  • Is there an opportunity for clients to share feedback?

Red Flags When Hiring a Coach

Questions to ask:

  • Is there excessive FOMO or fea3r being created?

  • Are you being told you’re broken or have a bad mindset and need fixing?

  • Is there an implication that something is wrong with you if you don’t buy now?

  • Does this feel like a pyramid scheme?

  • Are there specific promises about how much money you’ll make?

  • Does the buying timeline feel forced?

  • Does the program require you to “do what I did to be like me”?

  • Does this program promise a certain amount of influence?

  • Pretty branding with no substance?
