Overcoming Self Criticism: exercises to inspire and expand, plus how to have a Creative Girl Summer

How do we overcome self-criticism or judgment when we’re in the creative process? In this episode, I’m taking you through several exercises to support you in staying inspired and expansive while striving for your big dreams.

Exercises to Inspire and Expand

REFLECT: EXPANSION & REFLECTION

Start by drawing a circle; on the inside of the circle, write down or draw the expansive ("good") things that have happened for you for so far this year; on the outside of the circle, write or draw the contractive ("bad") things that happened so far this year.

Then, simply notice your feelings around the good and the bad, the expansive and the contractive. Consider the story you’re telling yourself about each occurrence and consider that the way you respond and react to both the good and bad sets the tone for your future.

TIME TRAVEL

Think about where you want to be by the end of this year. Put yourself in the moment as if it’s the closing days of the year.

Where are you?

Who is there?

How do you feel?

What have you achieved?

What has occurred in your life over this time?
What have you created?

How are you nurtured?

Nourishing Your Inner Child

Reflect on your childhood.

What was your favorite childhood game, toy, or hobby?

What was your favorite childhood movie, book, or, hero?

Reminisce and recall the joy when think about the magical experience those favorites gave you.

CREATIVE GIRL SUMMER

List five activities you enjoy doing. Make space in your life to do more of those things this summer.

List five skills that you want to have. Commit to to learning something new this summer.

List five things you would like to try once. Commit to trying one of those things this summer.

List a few things you never thought you’d do, but you’ve done. Acknowledge your bravery for doing that thing.

TAKE YOURSELF ON AN ARTIST DATE

The Artist Date, from the book The Artist’s Way, is a solo expedition to explore something that interests you. The Artist Date need not be overtly “artistic” — think mischief more than mastery. Artist Dates fire up the imagination. They spark whimsy. They encourage play.

What doing this work will do for your confidence:

Overcome self-doubt MORE QUICKLY

Creativity often involves taking risks and pushing boundaries, which can be daunting for individuals who lack confidence in their abilities. Cultivating self-worth and confidence can help creatives overcome self-doubt and embrace new ideas and approaches.

Become resilient in the face of criticism

Creatives often receive feedback, some of which may feel negative. Without a strong sense of self-worth, such criticism can be demotivating and even harmful to our mental well-being. However, with confidence and self-worth, we can approach criticism constructively and use it to improve our work.

Attract Opportunities and Manifest More

When we believe in ourselves and our abilities, we are more likely to put ourselves out there, network, and pursue opportunities. In contrast, those with low self-worth may hold back and miss out on opportunities that could help them grow. By cultivating confidence and self-worth, we can attract more opportunities and propel our manifestation abilities.
