Overcoming Comparison, Taking People Off Pedestals and Asking Questions That Matter with In My Non-Expert Opinion's Chelsea Riffe
Chelsea Riffe will immediately be your best friend. She’s the host of In My Non-Expert Opinion, a show dedicatd to life conversations from a woman going through the same s**t as you. She has weekly conversations around mindset, money, entrepreneurship, travel, podcasting, and lifestyle, all through a filter of transparency and context.
In today’s episode, we’re talking comparison, taking people off pedestals, and asking questions that matter.
We’re on social media for about 2.5 hours a day. Lots of good can happen during that time. We’re creating, of course, connecting to our communities, and sharing stories and causes that are important to us.
However, while we’re there, we often times compare our lives.
That leads to refreshing Instagram every 10 seconds, checking follower counts while working in our PJs, on our third coffee of the day, and not having washed our hair in days.
UGH.
We compare our behind-the-scenes stories to other people’s big moments.
We see only their successes, or how funny they are, how engaged their people are - and we forget that they’ve also likely spent hours upon hours in our exact same shoes.
So how do we get out of our heads and into action? Rather than letting other people’s wins diminish you, let their success expand you into new possibilities.
Turning comparison into inspiration.
Here are two ways to do that:
The Origin Story
This might seem counterintuitive - but trust me - this has worked for me time and time again.
Start by thinking about someone you aspire to be like. Next, dig in until you find their origin story. I’m not talking about the About Page on their website - I’m talking about the real origin story.
Typically you can do that by getting on Instagram and scrolling alllll the way back. I want you to scroll so far back that you see where their journey began.
There are likely several things you’ll uncover in this process.
1 - You’ll realize that they are just like you. They had a starting point; they tried things out, tested ideas, and had successes and failures. Along the way - they kept showing up.
2 - You may also learn about some of the things that they did to start gaining momentum in their niche.
For example several years after starting my blog I decided to create my first online course. I knew there were other bloggers having great successes with online courses and membership communities, and I wondered - how in the world do I even start this process!?
I turned to the Instagram pages and blogs of a few creators I admired. One example is Kathrin of Manifestation Babe. I scrolled all the way back and found that Kathrin not only shared her process of building her following, she also shared income reports - her first year btw - she made $9k for the year, the very next year, after launching her online course she was in the high six figures.
Well, that was plenty enough motivation and inspiration to get me on the path to designing my own course!
If I’d just stopped at her first few posts, I’d see her traveling, driving a fancy car, and living in a beautiful home, maybe I’d get discouraged.
Instead, I let her success inspire my own.
Visualize What You Want To Experience
The second tip is this before you open your apps, visualize taking something amazing from the experience. Open your social pages with good vibes only - and the second something, or someone, on the app brings you down, either un-follow or close it, and don’t re-engage until you can come back with a positive mindset. THE END.
I truly don’t believe you can use these apps to grow your business if it makes you feel bad.
It’s just like the algorithm: whatever emotional frequency we continue to put out will keep getting served right back to us.
If any triggers are firing in your mind when you get on insta, address what it’s all about first. Notice who and what you’re following and adjust to protect your mindset at all costs.
