What Are Annual Profections in Astrology?

The annual profections technique shows you which birth chart house and themes are being activated at each age. Based on the life areas activated for you, your day-to-day experiences are influenced by their unique themes.

Each year is a new opportunity to integrate the lessons of a sign, house, and planet. Every 12 years, you complete an entire cycle around the Zodiac and level up in the spiral of life.

Read on to learn the themes of House activations, how to calculate annual profections, and an annual profections wheel:

What is a Yearly Time Lord?

The Time Lord - or Lord of the Year - is the annual ruling planet calculated through your annual profections. This planet becomes the depositary of your birth chart during the 12 months of its activation.

This is the planet to watch. The Time Lord, in this sense, is the powerhouse or energetic guide steering the wheel of your life for the year.

Keep note of the transits of your Time Lord — how the movements of your yearly ruling planet are impacting the rest of your birth chart placements.

How Do You Calculate Annual Profections?

The most straightforward way of calculating your annual profection and Time Lord is to follow the 12-house division, starting with the rising sign, or ascendant, on the cusp of your 1st house. This is year 0 of your life in the 1st House of an annual protections wheel.

You can then cycle through the following houses, each year until you reach your current age.

Sounds complicated? Think again. Here’s a wheel below to grasp the simplicity of this technique.

Here’s the wheel.

The numbers in the concentric circles correspond to how old you are, and which corresponding Profection House will be the focus of your year.

For example: If Taurus is your rising sign, Venus is the Time Lord of years 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, etc. With the second house in Gemini, Mercury is the Time Lord of years 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, and so on.

How to Use Annual Profections Wheel

To make the most of this technique, take note of the following:

  1. How old are you? Pinpoint the house, sign and planet activated for you this year (and the years to come!) in your annual profections wheel.

  2. The meaning of the house and Time Lord activated for you. (Read on for a cheat sheet.)

  3. Take a closer look at your Time Lord by studying its placement in your birth chart. Observing how your Time Lord fits into your life, in general, will help you understand the main lessons, realizations, and points of focus for the year.

    • For example, if the Moon is your Time Lord this year, and your natal Moon is conjunct with Mars and opposite Pluto, you will experience themes around emotions, release, and decision-making.

  4. Keep tabs on the transits affecting your ruling planet throughout the following months.

  5. Consider your monthly moon returns, the potentially challenging aspects with your natal benefic and malefic planets, and the eclipses. New and full moons will help you determine how and when the Time Lord’s themes will be prevalent for you this year.

Planetary Rulers

Annual profection calculations require using the whole house system and the traditional planetary rulership to determine the yearly Time Lord.

Here’s a summary of the zodiac signs’ planetary rulers:

  • Gemini - Mercury

  • Cancer - Moon

  • Leo - Sun

  • Virgo - Mercury

  • Libra - Venus
