The Unique Essence of Human Design Reflector Type
As a reflector, your first reaction when you pull up your human design chart and see an all-white bodygraph might be to think it's broken. Let me reassure you: it is not! All that openness is pointing towards someone who is a very, very unique being.
In Human Design's vast and intricate system, Reflectors stand as a rare and enigmatic group, comprising a mere 1% of the global population.
These individuals, often referred to as "The Outsiders," possess unique traits that set them apart from the other energy types. Let's dive into the world of Reflectors, unraveling the intricacies of their personality, understanding their energy dynamics, and uncovering the wisdom behind their lunar sensitivity.
What is a Reflector in Human Design?
Human Design categorizes individuals into four primary energy types: Generators, Manifestors, Projectors, and Reflectors. As the name suggests, Reflectors function as mirrors to the energies surrounding them.
Reflectors' absence of consistent, defined energy centers in their Human Design chart distinguishes Reflectors from other types. Instead, they exhibit an open and receptive aura, absorbing and reflecting the energies of their environment.
Reflector Personality: Adaptable Mirrors
At the core of the Reflector personality is an unparalleled adaptability that sets them apart from the other energy types. Reflectors act as chameleons, seamlessly blending into the energy fields they find themselves in.
Their malleable nature allows them to see and understand situations from various perspectives, making them natural mediators and keen observers. However, this adaptability comes with its challenges. The quality that makes Reflectors exceptional mirrors also poses the risk of losing touch with their authentic selves.
In mirroring the energies of those around them, Reflectors may find it challenging to establish a stable and consistent personality, leading to a potential identity crisis. Reflectors approach decision-making in a way that aligns with their unique energy dynamics.
While other types have specific strategies, Reflectors are advised to wait through an entire lunar cycle – approximately 28 days – before making significant decisions.
This waiting period allows Reflectors to absorb and integrate the diverse energies throughout the lunar phases, ensuring their choices resonate with the most authentic and consistent flow.
Reflector Aura: Teflon, Sampling and Resistant
There is a misconception that having all that openness would mean a Reflector is "weaker" and more vulnerable. This is anything but the case, as Refectors' openness is their greatest strength.
Unlike the rest of the Types, whose openness contrasts what is defined (aka what is colored in), Reflectors' openness has no binary. They are here to filter the consciousness of humanity and the larger cosmic forces at work. To do this, they have been gifted with an aura that protects them.
Reflectors are described as having a "Teflon" aura, giving them a somewhat resistant barrier. The Reflector aura slides off the other Types, as they do not embrace others like a Generator or a Projector would.
It is also described as sampling, which opens and closes and only takes in specific information from others and their environment. Reflectors are the most resilient of us all.
When our openness is not given authority, it becomes a profound area of wisdom; thus, the Reflector has the most potential to be wise about the nature of life and humanity.
Reflector Energy Type: Ruled by The Moon
The rest of us with life force definition can be described as “Solar” Types. The Reflector, however, is classified as the sole “Lunar” Type. They are ruled and governed by the cycles of the moon. The moon, the fastest moving object in the sky, transits through all 64 gates in the rave mandala in a month.
As the moon moves through each of these gates, it activates different parts of the Reflector’s chart, giving them access to definition. You cannot understand who a Reflector is in one day. But if you observe them throughout a lunar cycle, you will begin to understand who they are.
They have a consistency despite looking like there is absolutely none. Reflectors are cycle beings, and time is their greatest ally — more on that once we get to their unique strategy. Understanding and embracing these natural rhythms is crucial for Reflectors to navigate life with grace and authenticity.
Reflector Environment and the Open G-Centre
Every other aura Type has the potential of having its G-centre defined. In comparison, all Reflectors share an open G-centre. The G-centre governs love, direction, and identity. Most importantly, it is connected to place and environment.
Anyone with an open G-centre needs to be discerning with their feelings in their environment — such as in their home, school, work, leisure, wherever. If an open-G walks into a restaurant and doesn’t feel good, it is not the right place, and they are with the wrong people.
But an environment that does feel good to them means they are in the right place with the right people. It could be exactly the same person or group of people in both places; it is all about being in the correct environment.
As Reflectors literally reflect through their openness to the state of their community, you can understand why the environment is so important to them. Where you are is who you are — so the first question to ask yourself as a Reflector is, “how do I feel in this environment?”
It is also not about mentally finding the “right” places to be in. Human Design teaches us to disengage the mind from decision-making and instead rely on the strategy of our Type. By honoring our strategy and authority, we will be taken to the correct places and meet the right people.
Reflector Purpose: The Judges, the Canaries in the Gold Mine, and the Filters of the “Program”
As Reflectors are taking in, sampling, and reflecting to us the state of any community, they make the best evaluators and judges of the collective. If you think about it, they ARE the embodiment of the collective consciousness, filtering the “program” or the “neutrino feed” in Human Design.
They understand the nature of life on a very intimate level that no other Type can experience. While Generators and Projectors are busy with themselves and others, Reflectors and Manifestors are sitting outside the majority (due to their aura).
They, therefore, have a closer relationship to this transiting neutrino stream. We must look to the Reflector as the “canary in the goldmine”; when the canary goes down, it signals something is wrong within a community or environment.
Reflectors are the barometer we can use to measure the health of any community. They need to be respected as having a role that is critical to society as a whole.
Reflector Existential question: “Who is different?”
Reflectors have truly seen it all as filters of the entire consciousness field. They know the vast homogenization of humanity. They know how rare it is to find something that is different.
And that is their extraordinary gift: to spot who is different, who has the potential to break the covenant with the program, and who dares to be an individual. Reflectors can pick those people and pull them out of the crowd.
The irony is when Reflectors are their “not-self,” aka when making mental decisions, they become the most homogenized, conditioned people of all, literally described as the “Cosmic Police Force”.
Since they know when somebody stands out as different from the rest, they can try to enforce sameness rules so everybody stays within those boundaries.
But when a Reflector is deconditioned and correctly operating according to their strategy and authority, they can allow those different beings to flourish and support them in their differentiation and uniqueness. This is an incredible gift that no other Type possesses in the same way.
Reflector Strategy: Wait a Lunar Cycle
The moment you’ve been *waiting* for. If you thought you had it bad as someone with emotional authority, well, that’s nothing compared to Reflectors’ strategy (I am totally joking for emphasis). The Reflector must wait for a 28-day lunar cycle before making any major decision.
That might seem “extreme” to most people, as we have been conditioned towards instant gratification and immediate responses. Nearly all Types must learn to wait and honor their unique time-frequency. To be a true Reflector, however, is to be disciplined in learning to wait.
So why wait for a lunar cycle? As the moon goes around and activates different parts of a Reflector’s chart, they gain awareness and intelligence around a decision. Then, as their consistency of “self” is revealed over time, their decision must be integrated with the different parts of themselves.
It is not so much as making a “decision” as to come to a solution, which sometimes requires a decision to be made and other times not.
When they fail to wait, they may find themselves in their not-self theme of disappointment with the outcome; they may realize that the correct solution would have come if they waited just a tad longer.
It is an experiential process, and nobody has a right to pressure the Reflector to speed up their timing; those who do are not correct for them. To have the best experiences and relationships, Reflectors must enter in themselves. Thus, they must give themselves the grace of at least one lunar cycle.
Reflector Not-self Theme: Disappointment
Our “not-self theme” indicates when we have not been honoring our Type’s strategy and authority. It is nothing to feel ashamed of if it presents itself, as it is a helpful marker that directs us back in alignment. The Reflector not-self theme is disappointment.
It’s the disappointment of having a situation, a person, or an experience turn out exactly how they thought it would. Reflectors’ gift of spotting something or someone different brings them joy. They want to experience something different and feel the delight of discovering something new.
The best solution to avoiding disappointment is to wait for a lunar cycle before making those major decisions: where to live, what to do for work, who is in your life, and other long-term experiences.
Reflector Signature: Surprise
It may not be a *surprise* that Reflectors know when they're operating in alignment when they feel surprised. The surprise in finding something they haven't experienced yet — that there is something different than the same-old homogenization of the collective.
To be surprised is to have that childlike joy come back and see the world with fresh eyes despite having already seen everything through a thousand lifetimes. We must cherish the Reflectors we know and have in our lives, as they truly see something the rest of us cannot.
If you are a Reflector reading this, understand how unique you are and how much we all wish to see you living and embodying your true nature.
TLDR; Living as a Reflector
Thriving as a Reflector involves a journey of self-discovery and embracing the unique role of being a mirror in the world. Here are key insights and practices for Reflectors to lead a fulfilling and authentic life:
Self-Reflection
Regular self-reflection is a cornerstone for Reflectors. Taking dedicated time to tune into their feelings and experiences enables Reflectors to distinguish between their authentic emotions and those absorbed by others.
Establishing Healthy Boundaries
Reflectors must develop and maintain healthy boundaries, given their heightened sensitivity to external energies. While their adaptability is a strength, Reflectors need to discern when to immerse themselves in the energies around them and when to step back for self-care.
Patience in Decision-Making
The 28-day waiting period for significant decisions may seem challenging in a world that often values quick choices. However, embracing this patience allows Reflectors to make decisions aligned with their true selves, free from the influence of transient energies.
Cultivating Supportive Connections
Reflectors thrive in environments where positive and uplifting energies can surround them. Building strong connections with individuals who appreciate and understand their unique gifts contributes significantly to their well-being.
